This post is for babies who have completed 8 months and just starting their 9th month. Before reading this post, pls read the below posts for an overview about baby food & preparation tips. Most of your questions will have answers in these posts. Also, please have a look at the food charts in these posts to check if you have introduced all those foods before introducing the foods mentioned in this 8 months food chart.
I increase one meal each month. This way, baby gets more breastmilk & no constipation at all.
- After completing 6 months, I started with breakfast at brunch time.
- After completing 7 months, I gave breakfast & lunch.
- After completing 8 months, that is on this month, I gave breakfast, lunch & dinner !
Below is my baby’s schedule for this month. This schedule is just for your reference. Please don’t try to fit your baby in this schedule. Let your baby decide his/her schedule to nap. And you choose a wise time (to feed solids) that suits you and your baby.

Continue breastfeeding as it is the main source of nutrition below one year & these solid foods are just complementary feeds. Do not expect your baby to finish the whole bowl. This is just learning phase. Let them learn, explore & enjoy food. Don’t force feed. The below shown bowls just shows the quantity that I prepare for my baby. Sometimes, my baby finishes the whole bowl but sometimes, she just turns off her head in just 1 or 2 spoons. When she says no, I try to give one or 2 spoons to confirm her NO. And if she still shows disinterest, I just stop feeding her. On such times, I breastfeed her more to compensate the nutrition. And also, I make her favorite food for the next mealtime so that she eats well to compensate the prior meal.
- Will do tadka/tempering & introduce little amounts of homemade chilli powder or sambar powder(link) & green chilli this month..
- Always add melted ghee(for proper digestion) to baby’s rice as baby needs good fat. I avoid ghee in night time.
- I use sesame oil & coconut oil to cook baby’s food. Rarely I use olive oil(In pongal) & groundnut oil. No refined oil at all.
- No salt or any sweetener in baby’s food till 1 year. Click here to know the reason.
- To cook vegetables, you can either cook with water in closed pan or steam using pressure cooker to preserve the nutrients. Pour some water in pressure cooker. Take veggies in a bowl. Make sure the veggies are wet. You can even sprinkle little water over veggies. Close the bowl and place inside the cooker. Pressure cook for 3 to 6 whistles or until cooked soft, as per the veggies.
- Always have a bowl of water while feeding sweet potato to babies to avoid dryness and gagging. Wet your hands often.
- As I breastfeed on demand, I just give few sips of water after every meal. Avoid giving water while eating as it hinders proper digestion. Give after after completing the meal.
- I gave my baby egg 3 times. 2 times last month and one time this month. When she ate for the first 2 times(1/4 of a whole boiled egg in the first time & half omlette in the second time), she was completely normal. But, third time(Day 2 of this month), when she ate 1/4 of a whole boiled egg, she puked(Vomited) in her nap. Then vomiting continued for 5 to 6 times in an hour. I gave her egg only based on the recommendation of my pediatrician in USA. After this incident, I stopped giving egg for a month. Yet to try again. Many pediatricians have many different views on starting egg for babies. Some say to start with white, some say to go with yellow and some say both ! So, better discuss with your pediatrician & start giving egg accordingly. But, keep an eye on your baby whenever you give egg below one year.
- I have used fresh fruits available here. Don’t opt for the same fruits. Opt for fresh seasonal fruits available in your locality. Same applies to vegetables as well.
- You shall replace Spinach with Palak keerai or arai keerai. You can also add the leaves of thandu keerai in dal/paruppu.
- I started giving fish this month. You shall select any fish with less or no bones. Don’t opt for big predator fishes. Pomfret/Vaaval is the best fish to start with. Indian Salmon, Ooli/Oola, Paarai, Murrel, Vela meen are other options in India. In abroad, u can go with Salmon(Wild-caught or Norwegian fresh water ones), Golden Pompano/Pomfret, Bronzini/Sea bass, Striped bass, Trout. Avoid Sockeye Salmon as it has strong flavor.

Radish sambar - Soak toor dal for 30 mins. Pressure cook(5 whistles) dal, small onions, tomato, radish, sesame oil, asafoetida, turmeric & roasted cumin powders. Mash well & temper with mustard seeds and 1 curry leaf. Used the same dal for our sambar too.

Once cooked and there is very lil water in it, add cooked rice and mash all with potato masher. U can also steam the veggies in pressure cooker by placing wet vegetables inside a closed bowl, and lil water outside the bowl.
White Rava upma - In sim, Sesame oil, 6 mustard seeds, 1 curry leaf, 1 chopped small onion, pinch hing. After a min, add 1/4 tomato chopped without skin & seeds. Baby just loved it..
Fruit bowl - Avocado 🥑 and watermelon. Gave 🍉 strips as finger food. There was little gagging initially but by the 3rd strip, she started eating beautifully by herself.. Soft Idiyappam - Idiyappam flour is just like making millet flour in this post(link). Just replace Foxtail millet/Thinai with raw rice/Pacharisi. After grinding to flour, dry roast in low flame until hot to touch. Cool down and store in refrigerator. Boil water with lil oil, pour boiling water to rice flour and mix to form soft dough. Squeeze using idiyappam press over a cloth on idli plate. Once water in idlipot comes to rolling boil, place idli plates with idiyappam and steam just for 5 mins. Immediately transfer it to a hot pack. Too much of steaming will make idiyappam rubbery.
