Homemade instant wheat cerelac is a travel-friendly baby food. I actually tried to make whole wheat biscuit for my baby, which turned out too hard due to lack of fat (less butter & no milk). When I pinged my baker guru Sharmi @Sharmispassions , she immediately gave me this idea of powdering the hard biscuits to make wheat cerelac, which is her son’s favorite. I was so happy that my biscuits turned out to be a delicious instant cerelac mix for my baby, which will be so useful in travel, busy hours & also when there is no power here in USA as I can’t cook without power in electrical stove ! Do try this out & I am sure your baby will love it just like mine 🙂
Instant Wheat Cerelac Preparation– Stepwise pic follow the below printable description:
- Wheat flour - 1 cup
- Cardamom powder - ⅛ tsp
- Butter - 2 tbsp
- Water - ¼ cup
- Cerelac Powder - 1 tbsp
- Hot or Warm Water - As required
- Take a cup of wheat flour(Chapathi flour) & ⅛ tsp cardamom powder in a mixing bowl.
- Mix wheat flour & cardamom powder well. Take 2 tbsp butter & melt it.
- Add melted butter and mix well with flour.
- Sprinkle little water(nearly ¼ cup) & combine them into a dough. Just combine. No need to knead.
- Roll it using rolling pin. Cut vertically & horizontally. I made big rectangles as I tried to make biscuits. You can make small squares so that powdering will be easier.
- Take out the corner shapeless pieces. Even-sized pieces will be baked evenly. Prick holes with fork to avoid puffing up while baking. Puffed portions tend to brown sooner and so pricking is recommended.
- I made lil thick pieces. Make ball with the collected corner pieces, roll it again, cut & prick holes. Repeat this process until dough is over.
- Transfer the biscuits to parchment/butter paper placed in a baking tray. Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 180 degrees Celsius.
- Bake for 20 to 30 mins depending on the thickness of the biscuit. Bake until back of the biscuit is in golden brown. Do not darken it as it will taste bitter. Mine took 25 mins as I made thick biscuits.
- Cool down and grind it in a mixer grinder. Fine or coarse is your choice as per your baby's preference. I ground lil coarse.
- Store in air-tight container. In room temperature, it stays good for 1 month. You can store upto 3 months in fridge.
- Take 1 or 2 tbsp of homemade wheat cerelac powder in baby's bowl.
- Add hot or warm water and mix to desired consistency.

- When hot water is available, do use hot or warm water for the butter to slightly melt. During travel time, when you can’t get hot water, you can go with normal water.
- Do not add more water to thin down, as thin porridge lack nutritional value.
- Do not brown(darken) the biscuits so much as it might taste bitter. Just make sure the bottom is in light brown.
- After 1 year, you can add more butter(upto 1/3 cup) & replace water with milk while making biscuits. You shall even add sweetener like coconut sugar or cane sugar or palm sugar.
- After 2 years, you can add 1/2 cup butter & make soft biscuits. In such case, just bake until cooked, say around 15 mins.
