Teething biscuit Preparation– Stepwise pic follow the below printable description:
- Wheat flour - ½ cup
- Rolled oats - ½ cup
- Fried gram/Pottukadalai - 1 tbsp
- Ajwain/Omam - 1 tsp
- Cloves/Krambu - 5
- Cardamom powder - ¼ tsp
- Ripe Banana - 2
- Butter or Coconut oil - 1 tbsp
- Take ½ cup oats and 1 tsp ajwain in small mixie jar & grind it for just 6 pulses to make a coarse powder and transfer it to a bowl.
- Take 5 cloves and 1 tbsp fried gram in the same jar & grind it to fine(as fine as possible) powder without any bits.
- In a mixing bowl, take ½ cup wheat flour and ¼ tsp cardamom powder. If you don't have powdered cardamom, you shall add 2 whole green cardamom to the last step along with cloves, while grinding.
- Add ground stuffs from steps 1 & 2 and mix well.
- Take 2 well-ripened bananas and mash it well using fork as shown in the pics below.
- Add 1 tbsp melted butter or coconut oil to the mixed dry ingredients. Add mashed banana to it. Do not add fully. Reserve some and use, only if the dough needed more moisture. I didn't use the reserved banana shown in last pic.
- Mix all together to form a dough. The dough shouldn't be too dry with cracks. At the same time, it shouldn't be too sticky. Don't add flour to bring the consistency. Just control the addition of banana to bring the right consistency. Too much banana will make the dough sticky. So, add banana incrementally & mix. Do not knead the dough. Gently mix it.
- Grease hands with ghee or butter or oil, pinch out a ball and roll between the palms. It should be slightly taller than the middle finger.
- Place a butter paper over a baking tray and place the biscuit over it. Flatten it using thumb. Shape the sides using forefingers. Make sure to round the corners as sharp corners might hurt the gums of babies.
- The biscuit should neither be too thick(will take longer time to bake) nor be too thin(might break in baby's mouth). Pre-heat the oven in 350 deg Farenheit or 177 deg Celcius.
- Bake it in the rack lower than the middle one. Bake for 15 to 20 mins on one side until the bottom is slightly browned.
- Turn the biscuits to the other side(pic 1) and bake again for 15 to 20 mins(pic 2) until the other side is slightly browned(pic 3).
- Let it cool down in the baking tray. Leave it open in the counter-top for 12 hours. If it's soft, you can bake in low temperature for more time and leave it inside the oven to harden more. When you try to bite it, it should be lil hard for you to bite. Still, you could bite and eat it, but not like soft cookies. Babies can't bite it without teeth. Pls do read the cautions mentioned in the Tips below.
2.Do not skip the flavorings as they not only impart nice aroma but they act as pain relievers too.
3.Butter can be replaced with coconut oil. Do not use more than specified as more fat will soften the biscuit.
4.You can replace banana with any sweet fruit that is your baby's favorite.
5.You can place the biscuits in a zip-lock cover and freeze it for a month. You can directly give it from the freezer as cold bite will soothe the teething pain.
6.I am not sure if you can get the right hardness without oven on stove-top methods.
7.Teething biscuits are not for eating purpose and so it should be made hard enough that the babies shouldn't be able to break it. But, still it is edible. Babies will just suck it, gnaw it & eat the slight crumbles that disperse out. At any time, the biscuit shouldn't break into baby's mouth causing choking hazard. Biscuit will soften when it soaks for longer time in baby's saliva and the chances of breaking increases. That's why, store-bought Teething biscuits clearly mention to get back the biscuit from the baby after 20 mins of usage for safety. But, I have given this to my baby, 1 biscuit a day. She gnaws for 30 mins and then throws down. Then after sometime, she asks for it & gnaws for some more time.. She has used this for 3 hours in a day & none of the biscuits broke.. After first 30 mins, I always make sure that I keep observing her very keenly so that I could take off the biscuit immediately, if it breaks. Luckily, none of my biscuits broke. Do not give this biscuit, once their teeth is out as teeth could break the biscuit and also, longer stay of food particles in the teeth might cause tooth decay. This biscuit is only when they are teething & the teeth is not completely out, yet.
8.Do not store the used biscuits & give it again on the next day. Discard the biscuits on the same day.
9.The babies will drop the biscuit down and again put back the wet biscuit in their mouth. Some store-bought Teething biscuits use band to tie the biscuit to baby's wrist to avoid falling down in the floor. You can try that concept by putting a hole in the corner of the biscuit, before baking it & tie a soft band using the hole & tether it to baby's wrist. But, I just recommend to keep the floor clean. Dropping down and putting back in mouth will just increase their immunity 😉

hi , can i give it to my 6 month old since she s developing two small teeth and wants to bite everything 🙂
Yes, you can ..
Hi
Can I use whole wheat flour instead of oats? That’s one cup wheat flour excluding oats.
Oats give a good texture to the teething biscuits.. But, you can skip it too..
