Serves: ¼ cup
Ingredients
  • Oregano leaves - 3 small leaves
  • Betel leaf - 1
  • Tulsi leaves - 10 to 15 small leaves
  • Peppercorns - 6
  • Palm candy crystals - 1 tsp
  • Water - ½ cup
Instructions
  1. Take 3 oregano/omavalli/karpuravalli/sambaravalli leaves and wash well in water. Do not squeeze the leaves while washing as it might expel the medicinal juice from the leaves.
  2. Take a betel leaf/vetrilai aka vethalai and wash well in water, without squeezing the leaf.
  3. Take 2 to 3 tender stems of Tulsi plant and just pluck out the leaves, discarding the stem. Then wash well in water, without squeezing the leaves.
  4. Take washed leaves of Tulsi, betel and oregano in a plate. Roughly, tear all the leaves to pieces.
  5. In a pan, take 6 peppercorns and dry roast in sim for 2 minutes.
  6. Pour ½ cup water to the pan and add the washed & torn leaves.
  7. Add 1 tsp palm candy crystals/Panangalkandu(whole or powdered). Refer notes below for additional info.
  8. Let it boil in medium flame until the water is halved.
  9. After 5 to 10 mins, once the water is halved, switch off the stove and pour the concoction to a bowl/glass through a strainer.
  10. Press with a spoon to extract all the drops from the leaves. Discard the leaves and the concoction is ready.
Notes
1.Palm candy crystals can be substituted with Palm sugar(Pananjarkarai) or Palm Jaggery(Karupatti). Do not add any other sweetener as any other form of sugar will increase the mucus secretion.
2.Once prepared, drink it fresh. Avoid storing and reheating. If you want to drink twice a day, just save some leaves to make next batch.
3.When you have cold/cough, drink this concoction daily(once or twice) for 3 to 5 days.
4.This can be given to 2+ years kids. Reduce the amount of leaves and pepper, when making for kids.
5.If you just have Oregano, then try Oregano tonic. If you just have betel leaf, then try Betel tonic. If you just have Tulsi leaves, then try Tulsi water. All these recipes are available in this website. If you have all 3 leaves, this is a very effective concoction for cold and cough.
