This post is for babies who have completed 7 months and just starting their 8th month. Before reading this post, pls read my post on 6 months baby food chart for an overview about baby food. Most of your questions will have answers in that post. Click here for link.
After completing 6 months(180 days) of exclusive breastfeeding, on 7th month(running), I gave one food a day at brunch time. Now, after completing 7 months(210 days), on 8th month(running), I added one more meal. So, this month, I gave breakfast and late lunch. As I am still breastfeeding on demand, I just give 2 to 3 sips of water after every meal.
Do not skip breastfeeding to give solid food. First breastfeed as usual and then give solid food after sometime. Give solids at least half-an hour to 45 minutes or even one hour after breastfeeding depending upon baby’s mood and appetite.
Below is my baby’s schedule for this month. This schedule is just for your reference. Please don’t try to fit your baby in this schedule. Let your baby decide his/her schedule to nap. And you choose a wise time (to feed solids) that suits you and your baby.

Some pointers to note…
- No salt or any sweetener in baby’s food till 1 year. Click here to know the reason.
- Always use fresh curd for babies. Do not feed curd with iron-rich food as Calcium in it hinders proper iron absorption. For the same reason, do not feed curd daily. Just once or twice in a week is ok.
- Give a piece of orange post meal or add some tomatoes while cooking or squeeze some lemon juice in iron-rich food as vitamin-C helps in proper iron absorption.
- Coconut milk and chicken soup are just used as dip only. Do not feed the remaining coconut milk or soup to babies as it just fills their tiny tummies causing calories deficiency and also lowers breastmilk intake.
- We eat Matta rice(click here for recipe) as it is not fully polished and so nutritious than white rice. So, I give the same rice to my baby as well. You can give whatever rice that you eat daily to your baby.
- At this stage, baby cannot eat more. The quantity shown below is what I prepared for my baby daily and she won’t finish the bowl, every time. Let your baby decide the quantity of food. Do not force feed. Just stop when baby shows signs of “NO”.
- You might wonder how could baby eat dosa now ? Idli or dosa, anyways, we are going to hand mash and give at this stage. When I make idli batter, first 2 days I give idli and the third day I give dosa. I don’t use the batter for more than 3 days for baby. I give other foods until I grind next batch of fresh batter.
- I don’t add salt in baby’s idli or aappam batter. I just mix the batter well with hand(without salt) and take some portion for baby in a separate bowl. Then add salt to our batter only. Batter will ferment well with or without salt. While making idli, I will sprinkle flax seeds/pumpkin seeds powder over baby’s idli to differentiate saltless idli.
- For aappam batter, as we are adding coconut to it, make sure you ferment for 6 to 8 hours only and not more than that as it will be spoiled. Refrigerate immediately after fermentation. If the climate is so hot, just 5 to 6 hours will do. Else, you can replace coconut with Poha/aval, ferment well and add ground coconut to the batter at the time of making aappam. Click here for link to aappam batter recipe in my instagram post.
- Always wash and soak dal/paruppu for at least 20 mins and then wash again to get rid of any chemicals and also to increase the bio-availability.
- In our Tamil families, Brinjal is generally not recommended for babies below 1 year, as they say it might cause itching for babies. But, WHO has recommended to give brinjal before 8 months as early introduction reduces any allergies in future. So, I just gave brinjal once at the end of this month and my baby was fine that day.
- I gave my baby egg 3 times. 2 times this month and one time next month. When she ate for the first 2 times(1/4 of a whole boiled egg in the first time & half omlette in the second time), she was completely normal. But, third time(next month), when she ate 1/4 of a whole boiled egg, she puked(Vomited) in her nap. Then vomiting continued for 5 to 6 times in an hour. I gave her egg only based on the recommendation of my pediatrician in USA. After this incident, I stopped giving egg for a month. Yet to try again. Many pediatricians have many different views on starting egg for babies. Some say to start with white, some say to go with yellow and some say both ! So, better discuss with your pediatrician & start giving egg accordingly. But, keep an eye on your baby whenever you give egg below one year.
- When you give beetroot, you will see pink color in the pee and poop, which is completely normal. Poop might be dark in color. Don’t worry ! Poop colors can be observed when you give greens/keerai, Finger millet/Ragi, Carrot, Beetroot. Don’t be scared. You might even see some bits of food in baby’s poop. That doesn’t mean indigestion.
- Do not blend baby’s food in mixie as it will become a habit and they won’t learn to chew their food. Use a potato masher, which is very handy and easy to mash baby food. U can mash to the consistency you want. It can even mash smooth like mixie, but not as a paste like mixie. Gradually, change the texture of food so that baby will learn to chew. Don’t wait for teeth as baby can chew well with gums. Fruits can be fork-mashed, Idli/Dosa/Chapathi/Idiyaappam/Aappam can be hand-mashed and Rice/Veggies can be potato-masher mashed. I use mixie only blend cooked barley.
- Spices added this month – Pepper powder(new) along with turmeric powder, asafoetida and roasted cumin powder that were already introduced last month.
- Recommended oils – Sesame oil and Coconut oil. Occasionally I use Olive oil & groundnut oil. Click here to know how to make coconut oil at home for babies ?
- Introduce one new food in a day and watch for allergies if any. Report to doctor if there is any vomiting or rashes and rush to emergency if there is shortness of breath/suffocation.
