This post is for babies who have successfully completed 12 months/1 year and starting their toddler phase.. Till 1 year, we tried to feed breastmilk before(half an hour to one hour) every meal as breastmilk was the main source of nutrition & solids are just complementary(till 1 year). But, after 1 year, solids are the main source of nutrition & breastmilk is complementary(but still recommended for physical & mental health of baby). So, the constraint of feeding breastmilk before every meal is no more required. You can give breastmilk on demand, around 5 times in a day and night feeds are again on demand of your baby. Cow’s milk can be given to babies after their first birthday. I have started mixing cow’s milk in her porridges and sometimes with rice or with idly. I don’t give cow’s milk as direct drink(except few days when I feel she had very less dinner or very early dinner) till 2 years or till when I plan to wean off breastmilk. Animal milk is not required as long as baby is breastfed. You shall discuss about it with your Pediatrician.. Also, some doctors recommend Honey after first birthday. But, my pediatrician recommended after second birthday.
Please have a look at the previous food charts(click here for link) to check if you have introduced all those foods before introducing the foods mentioned in this 12 months food chart. If you have any queries regarding baby food, pls read this post(click here) on Frequently Asked Questions and that will have answers to most of your questions.
Below is my baby’s schedule and this schedule is just for your reference. Please don’t try to fit your baby in this schedule. Let your baby decide his/her schedule to nap. And you choose a wise time (to feed solids) that suits you and your baby. Actually, the below schedule is after a month, after her first birthday. There was a drastic change in her sleep cycle & so for 1 month after her birthday, she was lil cranky as she felt sleepy in the mid-morning, but she couldn’t fall asleep, immediately. This is the phase where babies start to skip mid-morning nap. First they postpone the nap and finally skip it. For one month, she had a late morning nap between 12 to 1 PM and had her lunch just after that. Her evening nap was between 3.30 to 5 PM. Gradually, the mid-morning nap got postponed & finally after a month, she skipped it & started following the below schedule with long afternoon nap.

From baby’s first birthday, you shall start adding salt and sweet in baby’s meals. But, increase the salt quantity gradually. Also, you no need to sweeten all the porridges, smoothies, juices and milk. After 1 year, only Multigrain & oats porridges are recommended for babies, as it is high time to stop all other porridges and adapt to family meal. Porridges can be made creamier by adding cow’s milk, from now on. My first kid had unsweetened Multigrain porridge for 8 years & I am following the same with my lil one too. Sweet snacks can be sweet(avoid white sugar). But, do not use sweet as a bait to eat food. Milk(to drink) can be given without any sweeteners but can still be flavored using powdered nuts/cardamom/cinnamon stick/clove. Use one flavor per day. The main concept is, they can enjoy sweets but shouldn’t be dependent/addictive to sweet.

Took out a tbsp of cooked dal & veggies for baby & used the rest in our sambar. Venpongal & sambar are salted and made normally with usual spice level for our family pot. While feeding, mixed venpongal with dal and slightly dipped in our sambar. | ![]() She ate some wheat+jaggery cake during morning cake cutting. This bake was baked by my friend.. | ![]() Unsalted tomato rasam(link) with salted veggies taken from our sambar. That vadai is just for formality. I just gave a pinch from the central soft part. | ![]() I fed her mix of fruits when we were making fruits cake for her evening bday party.
